You're Famous, That Must Mean You Are An Activist!

In order to get a firm grasp on what it to be an "activist" we must look at the root word; active. In order to properly project the image of an activist, it is fundamentally necessary for that person to be active in the community impacted by said cause. In being active in any community in general, and the transgender community in specific, what learns even the most subtle nuance of how that community works. Being active in that community also educates one as to the specific needs of that community.

Recently the transgender Community found out the hard way what happens when somebody of high-profile lends voice to the community without having first lent her ear. Caitlyn Jenner has been very vocal about her desire to lend her voice to the progress of the transgender community. Recently in an interview with The Advocate, Caitlyn Jenner did indeed lend her voice. There was one small problem. It appears that in the short time that Caitlyn Jenner has been presenting in her new role, it escaped her to lend her ear.

It escaped Caitlyn that the world from our view is quite a bit different from the view of the world from Mount Olympus. While Caitlin continues to be fascinated with herself it appears she has very little time and is willing to put forth very little endeavor to show any interest at all in anyone else.

In a rapid fire series of faux pas, Caitlyn attempted to rebound by publishing an image of her new Locker in the ladies locker room at the Sherwood golf and country club in Malibu. Apparently it Escaped Caitlyn that one of the very crucial nuances of this community, especially as it relates to activism, is timing.

As such I feel compelled to make sure that Caitlin is brought up to speed. What were her busy schedule, and whatever precious little free time she has, perhaps she might read this article while she's out there at Sherwood on the 18th hole. You see there were two significant events that occurred on March 2nd. While Caitlyn was posting her reaction to the new Locker at Sherwood Golf and Country Club, it was being announced that 22 year old Lucia McCalip had committed suicide.

To be clear, we must all bear in mind that this is not a product of one single individual. Caitlin has a staff of assistants, coaches, and peers. Those peers have a responsibility to make sure that the proper image is being projected. When I speak of proper image I am not referring to Caitlin's. I'm referring to the image of every single authentic life represented by the show. Rest assured , the show represents in the eyes of many of its viewers the authentic lives lived by thousands worldwide. Everyone involved in that production knows full well that the E! network has no vested interest in properly representing authentic lives. It is now becoming clear that neither does Caitlyn Jenner. The responsibility now falls on people like Jennifer Boylan, Kate Bornstein, and the other individuals who appear on that show. To date, I have yet to see any of those responsibilities being properly met. The gross misrepresentation of those around the world who live authentic lives is disheartening and is a huge discredit to the movement to educate those not familiar with the authenticity of transitioning, and lives properly lived.

Sound Familiar? Those Who Fail To Remember The Past...

The conundrum of having someone who attained celebrity status attending to lend their voice to the transgender movement is not a new one. It was only a few months earlier that one trans man who had attained celebrity status pledged his life to activating for transgender rights, and shortly thereafter became upset when his level of notoriety had not reached acceptable point. His solution was to see greater notoriety by sabotaging and trashing the community. His actions earned him the dubious distinction of being the only person ever removed from Lynn Conway's success stories archive.

We are also gently reminded of Zoey Tur, who wanted to model what it is to be transgender. In her haste to do so, Zoey attempted to educate the world by doing an interview with WOW. In the interview she related her experience with "trying to be gay", thus misgendering herself. She later continued the interview, and continued the misinformation, by attributing the transgender condition in men who were born presenting in female form to polycystic ovarian syndrome, stating that the lack of estrogen created the condition in transmen, and suggesting that estrogen replacement would negate the need for transmen to transition. Zoe's distinctive career culminated in her appearance on the dr. Drew show. It was on that show that she displayed the highlight of her advocacy by threatening to send Ben Shapiro home in an ambulance.

We are also constantly reminded of the devastation that can occur from within when someone transitions, regrets it, and starts posting that regret all over the internet. Walt Heyer gains notoriety when he started his website. From that website he proceeded to spread misinformation, and make every attempt he possibly could to demonize those who found themselves needing to transition in order to live authentically. After transition , Walt found his new place in society among radical conservatives. Walt offered himself up as a poster child for making those who have transitioned look foolish.

To be clear, we must all bear in mind that this is not a product of one single individual. Caitlin has a staff of assistants, coaches, and peers. Those peers have a responsibility to make sure that the proper image is being projected. When I speak of proper image I am not referring to Caitlin's. Lambda Nominees, and the amazing lives that proved them wrong.

I thought it appropriate to wrap up this post with props to one Dr Alice Dreger. Alice was nominated for a LAMBDA award. Alice is a professor at Northwest University; or at least she was. Alice Dreger resigned. Up to the point of her resignation, she taught of all things; ethics. Alice had a propensity for labeling herself a "tireless advocate" of those in the intersex community. Alice wasn't the only person to be shown the door at Northwest. Northwest University also produced J Michael Bailey, the author of the book "The Man Who Would Be Queen", a trashy novella where he cruises a gay bar, pays a bunch of patrons to do slanted interviews, and calls it research. How about we look at some of the people he didn't interview before making the statement. Bailey had hoped that those who transition would fit neatly into the boxes he created that fateful weekend when he outlined his book. there were plenty more to interview, however Bailey failed to do so. He had one small problem. I didn't fail to interview them. I followed those lives, and continue to do so up to this day.

In the next article I am going to feature those that Bailey didn't interview. I will look at those who transitioned in their professions, and continue on with those professions. I was going to add them at the end of this article, but the numbers are just too great. The lives are just too amazing to simply be a foot note to this article. We will look at innovators, professionals, and those who stepped up to contribute to all of humanity. That is what it is to "lend your voice". You simply cannot lend your voice untill you have lent your life to all of humanity, not just one chosen group.
